Project Description:

Our company research focuses on promoting animal health by modulating the microbiome through probiotics and active compounds.  In the cattle industry, newborn and pre-weaned calves are the most vulnerable to morbidity and mortality – diarrhea/scours is the number one cause of calf mortality.  Furthermore, the development of a balanced microbiota in the first few weeks of life is crutial to the overall health of an organism, and disruptions in normal colonization has been linked to long-term health consequences.  In this project, we will be developing several lines of probiotics targeted to newborn and pre-weaned calves.  The project will begin at isolation, and will go through numerous in vitro and in silico testing of the isolates to assess their suitability as a probiotic.  At the end of the project, we will have a collection of novel probiotic candidate strains that are ready for testing in vivo in calves.  The aim of the probiotics are to reduce calf morbidity/mortality, and improve cattle performance with long-term health.

Research Objectives:

  • Isolation and establishement of culture collection derived from healthy pre-weaned calves’ feces.
  • in vitro tests of isolates to determine suitability as probiotics.
  • in silico analysis of 5-10 best candidate probiotics based on in vitro results above.

Methodology: • Isolation of Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, and other probiotic candidate taxa using selective media and confirmation of species using 16S rRNA sequencing.
• In vitro assessment (inc. inhibition against calf pathogens, colonization assays, resistance assays, cytotoxicity assays, etc.).
• In silico analysis (inc. whole genome sequencing and annotation, genome mining for safety assessment)
