In collaboration with Sigma XI, the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) in the US has released an institutional policy report based on a 2016 survey of 130 institutions that hire postdocs and hold NPA membership.
The key recommendations in the report are that institutions that hire postdocs should:
1) Increase the staff and budget for their postdoc offices
2) Provide higher compensation and equality in benefits
3) Increase parental leave policies and family-friendly benefits
4) Improve tracking of postdocs after they leave an institution
This report is very informative regarding postdoctoral policy issues in the US, which are quite similar to the challenges facing postdocs in Canada – hence the similarity in recommendations to our CAPS/ACSP 2016 National Postdoc Survey Report.
